Our History

From founding to a national movement — since 2018

The Korea Para Sports Association of USA has grown from a founding vision into a recognized national organization, forging partnerships across the US and Korea to champion para sports for Korean-Americans with disabilities.

July – August

Building a Foundation and Network

  • (Chicago) Support and cheer on the Korean national women's disabled soccer team at the Special Olympics 50th anniversary national soccer tournament.
  • (LA) Meeting with former Milal Director Lee Young-seon, building cooperation and relationships with the Korea Disabled Sports Association.
  • (LA) Support for a friendly match between the Korean national ice hockey team for the disabled and the LA Kings.
  • (Georgia) Meeting with Pastor Kim Jang-geum and Choi Jae-hyu of the Milal Mission and encouragement for the disabled swimming team.

Board of Directors Meeting and Inaugural Ceremony (Washington, DC)

  • Formation of the Board of Directors and the holding of a historic founding ceremony.

First Challenge

  • The first participation of the American team in the 38th National Para Games (Iksan) — 21 people, including 4 athletes.
  • Business agreement with the Korea Paralympic Swimming Federation.

March

Organization Launch

  • 1st Regular Board Meeting and Launch Ceremony (Park Sun-hyun elected as President of Kansas City).
May – July

Expanding the Scope of Activities

  • Participation in the 13th National Sports Festival for Students with Disabilities (Jeollabuk-do).
  • (LA Korean Education Center) Dongpera performance hosted by the Suwon City Disabled Welfare Foundation (Director: Pastor Go Jin-myeong), organized by KPSAUSA.
  • Promotional activities for the Milal Western Region Love Camp.
  • Promotional activities for the Milal Eastern Region Love Camp.

Partnership for Leap Forward

  • Dispatch of athletes to the 39th National Sports Festival (Seoul).
  • Signing of MOU with Korea Paralympic Committee (KPC).
  • Signing of MOU with Seoul Metropolitan City Disabled Sports Association.
  • The 1st Pan-American Para Games Organizing Committee Launched (Kansas).
  • Signing of the Midwest Adaptive Sports Association MOA.

Fundraising and Training

  • (Kansas City Korean Mission Church) Daily Meal to Raise Funds for the National Juche Exhibition.

  • Inauguration Ceremony of the 1st Pan-American Para Games Promotion Committee (National Assembly Library).

Hosting of the First Pan-American Para Games

  • Host: Kansas — historic first tournament.

Extraordinary General Assembly of Delegates (Kansas)

  • Selection of the 2nd and 3rd Sports Festival host sites.
  • Pan-American Para Games final report and progress report.

  • (Ulsan) Participation in the 42nd Ulsan National Para Games.
  • (Ulsan) Korea Paralympic Committee Meeting.
  • (Special Olympics Office, Gangnam-gu) Business Agreement Ceremony with Special Olympics Korea.

Phase Strengthening and Exchange

  • Participation in the Special Olympics Korea Summer Games.
  • Selected as an overseas branch organization of the Korea Paralympic Committee.

Organizational Reorganization

  • Regular general meeting, chairman election, and executive meeting.
  • Business agreement with Gyeonggi Province Disabled Sports Association.

Community Contributions

  • Hosted the Eastern Milal Mini Sports Festival.

A New Beginning

  • Inauguration Ceremony for the new KPSAUSA President (Washington).

Active Participation

  • Participation in the 43rd National Paralympic Games (Mokpo) and support for the swimming federation's training camp.

  • Regular General Meeting and Sponsorship Night, Sports Festival Sponsored Golf Tournament.

  • Host: Maryland — successful tournament.

  • Attending the Paris Paralympic Games observation delegation.

The 4th Executive Committee Launches

  • Annual General Meeting and 4th Presidential Election — President Chung Nam elected (Dallas).
  • Dallas Bowling Association President's Cup Championship and Mini-Sports Competition.

  • Business agreement signed with Suwon Daein Hospital and Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Disabled Sports Association.

Participation in the National Sports Festival

  • KPC Welcomes Delegation of Excellent Facilities (LA).
  • Dispatch of athletes to the 45th National Para Games (Busan).

  • Scholarships awarded to two athletes at the 45th Busan National Para Games (USD 500 each).
  • Gyeonggi Province Disabled Sports Association donates shoes to two boccia players.
  • Business agreement with the Korea Disabled Bowling Association.
